Introduction
This was one of the oldest Subramania temple located on the top of beautiful and picturesque Pintali Hill situated in Thali/Ittonam/Peringannur in the border of erstwhile Cochin and Malabar Region (presently in the border of Varavoor and Thirumittacode Panchayaths in Thrissur and Palakkad Districts of Kerala State. This temple is popularly known as ‘Malabar Pazhani’.
History
Pintali Hill is believed to be one of the sacret Hill by the devotees of the locality. The main reason attributed to the sanctity of the Hill is no doubt the presence of chaithanya of Lord Subramnia from time immemorial, which has been substantiated in the Devaprasnam conducted on 22.7.96 as a prelude to renovation programme by renowned austrologers under the leadership of Irumkoottur Unnikrishnapanikar. The top of the hill called ‘Thirumudi’ has a distinct identity and the history of the same is connected with surrounding temples. The Thirumudi is believed to have been built by Bhoothas. It is believed that the Boothas dug the wonderful ‘Arakulam’ near famous Thali Siva Temple by overnight and with the dawn they could not accomplish the task and a basket of mud remained with them and with this mud they ran on the pintail hill and deposited the mud on the top and built the present Thirumudy. This Thirumudy is considered as sacret where the earlier temple existed. This temple was originally constructed with the effort of Late Sri Echu Menon who was an eminent social reformer in the locality. The local people extended whole hearted cooperation and support for the construction of this temple.
Background of Renovation
This temple was one of the glaring example of prosperity of the people of this area. Regular poojas and offerings conducted without interruption and annual celebrations like Shasti and Pooyam were held with traditional and gaiety. In all sense, this temple’s growth reached at the peak till 60s.
However, the implementation of land reforms coupled with the economic backwardness of this thinly populated area and lethargic approach of the devotees contributed to the downfall of the temple. This compounded with the natural calamity slowly and gradually caused the ruinage of this magnificent temple.
Taking advantage of the situation, vested interests tried to grab the temple premises and even they tried to remove the remanents of the temple causing damage to the sacret Thirumudy. Sensing the impending danger, devotees awakened under the leadership of Hindu organizations like Kerala Kshetra Samrakshana Samithi, etc. to take up the renovation work of this temple and decided to restore the past glory. But they had toa face stiff resistence from the mighty adversaries including the administration who tried to disgruntle the renovation programme. Administration also denied the right to workshop and also obstructed the annual monthly and weekly religious prayers and festivals, poojas and Bhajans. However, devotees started peaceful agitation programmes for liberation of this abode of Lord Subramania and for restoring their legitimate right to workship, obstructed effort of devotees and many devotees oincluding the women and children were falsely implicated in a number of criminal cases. A number of devotees especially women and children were arrested while going for Bhajan and poojas by police and charged with false criminal cases. However, the devotees undeterred and with the blessings of Lord Subramania continued their effort and which culminated into the renovation of this magnificent temple.
PRATHISTA
Kanippayyur Parameswaran Namboodiripad prepared plan for the temple and the foundation stone of the Sreekovil was laid by his highness Swamy Thathamayananda of Sreeramakrishna Madom, Puranattukara on 11.7.97 in the presence of Sri V.K. Viswanathan, organizing Secretary of Kerala Kshetra Samrakshana Samithy and a large number of devotees. After completion of the construction work of Sreekovil and Thidappulli, elaborate arrangements were made for Pratishta Ceremony under the Thantric Leadership of famous Thantra Vidyapeedom, Aluva. The pratishta ceremony was held on 25th March, 2001 under the auspice of Kerala Kshetra Samrakshana Samithy and the pratishta rituals were from 22nd to 25th March, 2001.
RENOVATION PROGRAMME
Renovation of the temple is a gigantic programme as all the materials are to be head loaded to the top of hill and water is to be pumped from the downstair. Therefore, the expenditure would be four times the construction being undertaken in the low level areas.
